About
Miggi Handmade jewelry embraces a variety of colorful gemstones and playful design nods to inject whimsy and liveliness into our daily lives. At Miggi we believe that jewelry both grounds us to the natural world and inspires imaginative daydreams. This duality mirrors our experience of seeking familiar comforts while yearning for adventures unknown. Our pieces express balancing these needs through sculptural harmony between soft curves and escapist expression, with visual presence and tactile weight that prioritizes the experience of the wearer.
Our handmade process embraces one-of-a-kind pieces and small batch made-to-order production. We choose to work with sterling silver and solid gold precious metals rather plated jewelry or other metals due to overall durability, hypoallergenic properties, intrinsic value, and sustainability. Plated pieces contain a thin layer of surface metal that can chip, scratch, or fade over time, exposing the base metal (ex. copper, brass, nickel) that discolors the piece and may irritate skin. Solid jewelry is made from the same material throughout, so it maintains its color and can be polished, cleaned, and resized or repaired more easily. While sterling silver can tarnish, its brightness can be returned with a polishing cloth. Further, the precious metal content of jewelry retains intrinsic value so it can be resold or passed down as a family heirloom.
Jewelry at Miggi is handmade in-house, all in our studio in Massachusetts. Many of our pieces are made from wax carving and lost-wax-casting techniques. This ancient method involves hand-carving models of the jewelry from wax that gets set into a hardening plaster "cast". The wax is then sacrificed from the cast (i.e. "lost") using heat to make the mold, then molten metal is poured into the mold. Finally, the cast is disintegrated to remove the metal piece in a raw, unfinished state for polishing and stone setting. This fabrication method offers advantages in design freedom, however is a time-intensive process. The majority of our gemstone pieces are fabricated using this method, hand carving the wax to sculpturally suit each stone to be one-of-a-kind. All stones have been selected for their color and vibrancy, often with natural inclusions or "imperfections" that bring depth and dimension.
